Honorable Mention Swan Song M. Kathryn Black Once, swans glided on the oxbow. Their long white necks were harps, and I could hear a subtle music travel on the warm wind towards me. Each bow and dip–water drops as crystal notes flying and falling in brightness, partnered sun and bird. I stand on the road; there is only silence. I mourn the violent deaths of pretty things who give pleasure to a gray world, remember with sadness vivid white upon the still, watery reflected sky– pearl clouds and shocks of sudden blue. I will carry the swan’s song inside me.
